CNC linear guides fall into three practical families — ball-type profile rail, miniature profile rail, and self-lubricating profile rail — and the right one for a given machine depends less on the machine's name than on its load pattern, duty cycle, and how clean the environment around the axis actually is.
A linear bearing is any component that lets a carriage move in a straight line while carrying load — the category splits into rolling-element (ball) types and sliding (plain/bushing) types, then further into profile rail, round supported rail, and unsupported shaft configurations.
Water cooling and air cooling solve the same problem — keeping a spindle motor from overheating — through different trade-offs. Water cooling handles sustained, heavy cutting loads but adds a pump, tank, and hoses to maintain. Air cooling needs less support equipment but tolerates less continuous load before performance drops.

Rack and pinion earns its place when the axis is long enough that a ball screw would need a larger diameter, a support scheme, or both to stay below its critical speed. Below that point, a screw usually gives better stiffness and positioning for less money. The crossover is a calculation, not a fixed number.
